Gender discrimination in Bangladesh is very conspicuous. The people of Bangladesh think women should confine themselves in household works. Staying at home has become a tradition for women.

The parents think that one day the girl will become the wife of a house. So she need not study more and do other works. The husbands treat their wives very harshly. If anything happens in the family, the women become responsible for that. In the sphere of services, men get priority. Women are disqualified for lack of strength and courage. The women who are divorced from their husbands are very dishonored in society and family. Society treats them with dishonor.

People still look down upon women as a weaker section of society even these days because women are lagging behind in education and earning. Besides, lack of education, superstition, and social view are responsible for discrimination.

There should be no discrimination between men and women. We must remove this to establish our equal right for our progress and prosperity.

The parents think that the female child will go away into another family as wife in due course of time and will not contribute anything to the-family welfare. The society considers the women to be weaker in strength and wisdom.

So, they are faced with discrimination in the spheres of employment and career building. Society also thinks that their duty is to do household chores and rear up children. So, they are not allowed to go out of home and are not given the light of education. As such they cannot develop strong personality and are not associated in decision making. A female child is welcomed in the family with disaffection, because she is regarded as nothing more than a burden and a liability.

This problem of gender discrimination can be solved by creating general awareness among the people about the talents and importance of the female and removing social superstition prevailing against them. When the women will be properly educated, they will be in a position to prove their worth and then the unmerited discrimination against them will automatically vanish.

Gender discrimination has some long term negative effect on the body and mind of the girl. They develop a sense of self effacement, self denial and inferiority. They are given less food than the male children. So they suffer from malnutrition. Women become victims of torture because of gender discrimination. Only education can remove gender discrimination.

An educated girl can stand on her own feet. She becomes conscious of her rights. She also commands the respect of people around her. We must give up our traditional view and attitude towards women. We must raise mass consciousness against gender discrimination.

It causes their health hazards, mental distress and even in some cases premature death. Being deprived of proper health care and nutrition they become vulnerable to various diseases. Being subjected to domination they begin to think themselves to be defective human beings.

As a result, they suffer from inferiority complexities. They are considered to born only to become wife of a husband and mother of some children. To solve this problem we should change the outlook towards girls. It should be accepted that women are equal partners to men. Proper education and nutrition should be ensured to female children. For a better future of humankind we must get rid of gender discrimination.
